Discovery's Portfolio of U.S. Networks Kicks Off the New Year on Ratings High

Driven by new and returning series, specials, the crowning of a new MISS AMERICA and a PIT BOSS named Shorty, Discovery's U.S. networks logged numerous ratings milestones throughout January.

Discovery Communications: portfolio of networks was up +9% in P25-54 primetime delivery in Jan 10 vs. Jan 09, while non-DCI cable was up only +2% and broadcast down -9%.

Discovery Channel: top 10 network in Men 25-54, driven by DIRTY JOBS and HOWE & HOWE TECH, ranking #1 and #2, respectively in their timeslots in M25-54/18-49. The continued popularity of MAN VS. WILD earned the series the #1 slot in M18-49 at 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, and the premiere of SWAMP LOGGERS ranked #1 for the night in M25-54 (Jan 15).

TLC: #10 network in Women 25-54/18-49/18-34 and Persons 18-34, fueled by new and returning series including CAKE BOSS, WHAT NOT TO WEAR, ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY and LITTLE CHOCOLATIERS averaging more than 1M P2+. MISS AMERICA was crowned the #1 cable telecast for the night in all key demos, attracting 4.5M P2+, followed by the 19 KIDS AND COUNTING baby special which also ranked #1 (excluding sports) delivering 3.2M P2+.

Animal Planet: best January ever in W18-49 and best in 7 years in P25-54, propelled by new and returning series PIT BOSS, THE HAUNTED and I SHOULDN'T BE ALIVE  posting +82%, +54% and +74% increases, respectively in W25-54 vs. year-ago.

Investigation Discovery: best month ever in P2+, HH, P/M/W 25-54, and new series ON THE CASE WITH PAULA ZAHN, DISAPPEARED and I (ALMOST) GOT AWAY WITH IT posted double-digit gains vs. 1Q10 to-date prime average, regularly beating fully distributed networks, including Bravo, National Geographic Channel, CNN, We and Oxygen in key P25-54 demo.

Science Channel: up double-digits in P2+ and P25-54 vs. Jan 09, catapulted by HOW IT'S MADE, MANTRACKER, BIG, BIGGER, BIGGEST and METEORITE MEN,all experiencing triple and double-digit gains vs. 1Q to-date prime average in all demos.

Military Channel: best month ever in HH, P/M/W 25-54 and 18-49, fueled by series premieres of UNSOLVED HISTORY and WORLD AT WAR.

Discovery Health: up double-digits in all key Person and Women demos vs. Jan 09, and premiere of HOARDERS: BURIED ALIVE, a Discovery Studios production, was Health's best telecast ever in P2+, P25-54 and HH.

Discovery en Español: best Jan ever in HH, posting double-digit growth in key P/M/W18-49, driven by DISCOVERY PRESENTA specials and premiere of new series PARASITOS ASESINOS, which garnered 207k P2+. *
