Discovery Channel Repeats as Leading Nonfiction Network in Japan in Latest Survey

Discovery Channel achieved its highest reach ever in Japan, reaching 22.5% of households and ranking third out of 38 channels during a recent RVCS peoplemeter survey for cable and satellite channels in the market. With the exception of animation channels, which took the top two spots, Discovery Channel placed highest on the list beating all movie, sports and drama channels during the period of December 8-21, 2008. The channel has increased its reach by 27% over last year, when it ranked sixth.

In the same survey, Discovery Channel ranked fourth and fifth among Males 20+ and Females 20+, respectively. Additionally, the channel placed seventh among Children 4-12 and tenth among Teenagers 13-19. Overall, Discovery Channel ranked in the top ten in all demographics surveyed, from Children to Males and Females 50+.

The stellar showing was driven by the performance of the Human Body Special, featuring new series HUMAN BODY: PUSHING THE LIMITS and an encore of SEX, PREGNANCY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE BABY — which won Grand Prix and Documentary Award distinctions at the 2008 SUKAPA! Awards.
