LIFE Premiere Watched by 33.8 Million Viewers Across Seven Networks: A Message from Clark Bunting

The premiere of Discovery Channel’s LIFE was a big moment in the company’s history. Simulcast across seven of our networks, LIFE was experienced by 33.8 million viewers who also saw Discovery Channel at its very best.

In his first days as COO, Peter Liguori shared his vision that LIFE should be simulcast across our networks with HD simulcasts as well as Discovery Health. This innovative thinking helped deliver an incredible 5.24 HH rating and a gross average audience of 9.4 million P2+ and 4.3 million 25-54 viewers.  I want to personally thank Peter and the network GMs for their support in bringing LIFE to life for so many viewers.

Indeed, everyone should feel proud of this historic moment.  The campaign to take LIFE from raw footage to a TV masterpiece was a mammoth effort that harnessed the contributions of many people from across the company. From the staffs at DCTC and Sterling to Discovery Creative, Global Events, Marketing, Communications and beyond, everyone who touched LIFE delivered in a big way.

I’d like to offer special congratulations to everyone on the Discovery Channel team who dedicated countless hours to making the premiere of LIFE the most watched program on the network since WALKING WITH DINOSAURS and RAISING THE MAMMOTH in 2000. LIFE’s debut on Discovery Channel reached 11.8 million viewers – that’s nearly two million more than the debut of PLANET EARTH

Here’s to thinking big, taking risks…and to LIFE.  See you next Sunday!
